What is the dose of cimetidine (TagametÒ ) for the treatment of warts?

Several clinical trials have evaluated the safety and efficacy of cimetidine for the treatment of warts in adults and children.1 The literature reveals a lack of consensus, but overall suggests that cimetidine is safe and effective for the treatment of recalcitrant warts. However, cimetidine is not FDA approved for this indication. The literature suggests that high dose cimetidine (25-40 mg/kg/day) is the most effective for the treatment of recalcitrant warts. Flat warts seem to respond better to cimetidine and do not require as high of doses. Literature suggests that 1200 mg/day is sufficient to cure flat warts. Cimetidine should not be used as first line therapy for warts but should be considered an option for treatment when standard therapies have failed.
