Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) sponsored the annual APA Legislative
Day on Thursday, April 10th. The goal was to communicate the value of
pharmacy in the state to Alabama State legislators. This is a very
important event for Alabama pharmacists and pharmacy students because
it's an opportunity to showcase pharmaceutical care services to Alabama
legislators.
Harrison School of Pharmacy was well represented
by 9 faculty members, 13 students, 1 grad student and 1 staff member.
Dr. Kimberly Braxton Lloyd, Chair of this year's APA Legislative Day
Committee, has updated us on the recent goings on in the Capitol City
from our School's perspective. Student, Michele Richard, shared a few
photos with us so we can get a sense of the activities that went on that
day. (Please select PHOTO GALLERY to the left)
Dr. Braxton Lloyd reports:
"We provided a number of services including weight
and body composition analysis, osteoporosis screenings, blood pressure
measurements, cholesterol evaluation, and cardiovascular risk
assessments. Dr. Olin also was available to respond to drug information
questions and Dr. Fox provided demonstrations of PDA software for use by
patients to track their medications, nutrition, and health.
We were very busy between the hours of 8 to 12.
The most popular stations were the weight / body composition analysis,
cholesterol, and osteoporosis stations. During the morning hours, we
conducted over 100 cholesterol tests and over 30 osteoporosis
screenings.
These services were provided for all State House employees, including
the legislators, staff members, security officers, and a few family
members. Students were also provided the opportunity to observe the
legislative process throughout the morning by observing the activities
on the House floor. At noon, the students met with a few of the
legislators for an interactive exchange of information and to discuss
pharmacy related issues."
Afterwards, all volunteers met at the APA office
for lunch before returning to Auburn- a little more tired than when they
left that morning, but also feeling it was well worth the effort.
