Jeffcoat, a P1 student, has been selected as the recipient of
an Undergraduate Student Research Fellowship given through the Auburn
University Undergraduate Research Program. The Office of the Provost for
Research will soon be announcing the program and all the recipients.
The fellowships are awarded to undergraduate
students who are interested in pursuing a research project with the help
of a mentor. Dr. Norman Doorenbos, of the Pharmacal Science Department,
is Jill's mentor. Jill says Dr. Doorenbos encouraged her to apply and
"greatly assisted me throughout the process." She described the process
as follows: Dr. Doorenbos filled out an application. Jill had to procure
2 letters of recommendation. Then she was asked to an interview with 5
Auburn faculty members from different departments across campus asking
the questions. The University gives out multiple fellowships for three
semesters and two one-semester fellowships. Jill received a one-semester
fellowship. Practically, this means Jill will be provided, by the
University, with a $1,000 fellowship stipend and project funds of $700
to accomplish the research. Jill reports the planned research will
involve testing some steroid antibiotics for efficacy against staph
infection.
Congratulations, Jill. May this be the beginning
of a distinguished pharmacy career for you. And thanks also to Dr.
Doorenbos for being such an encouraging and supportive mentor.
