uch has
happened since our last update. First, Aubie came by for a visit to our
construction site. Aubie
can always stir things up a bit as you can see. Competing with Aubie for your attention is
a
new feature now on the
Building Renovation page:
a video
walk-through of the new building. This is futuristic technology that
is...well, there's no other word for it...it's COOL!.
You may feel as though you're inside a video game, but you'll just be moving
through the new building as if it's already finished and you've come to
see it for the first time. You don't want to miss THAT trip.
Furthermore, On May 5th
HSOP hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the renovation. Hard
hats and shovels were the order of the day. Some 100 guests gathered
under a large tent on the lawn in front of Miller Hall to commemorate
the occasion. Dignitaries included, James I. Harrison, Jr., James O.
Walker, Sr., Ed Richardson,
Interim President of Auburn University,
Thomas R. Hanley, Provost, and John G. Blackwell of the AU Board of
Trustees. And, though we're not going to be able to name everyone, some of our distinguished alums and supporters were also
present: Charlie Thomas ('65), Chris ('98) and Kami Singley Borden
('97), Tim Bishop ('71) and wife Peggy, Tony Holland ('84), and wife
Kymberly, a '91 AU MBA graduate, Darrell Craven ('82) of Eli Lilly, Walt
Rogers with CVS, John Hughs, a 1950 graduate in Interior Design, and
Elizabeth Lipscomb, a 1950 Ed graduate. Chad Harrison, President of the
HSOP Student Council, was also in attendance. Thanks to all attendees.

And don't forget to keep
a check on the
live
WebCam
from the top of
Haley Center. From there you'll have a bird's eye view of
much of the outside construction and see the minute-to-minute changes.
As
for the past few weeks, the auditorium has been completely cut away from
the old building and demolished, cranes have been scooping out the old
dirt and remains of the old foundation which was under the
auditorium and replacing it with a more compacted soil which will give
better support. Holes are being dug for new foundation supports.
Faculty and staff parking around the building has been virtually eliminated for the next
couple of months and the street closed off to all but emergency traffic
and deliveries. This was done so new underground lines of various kinds
can be run. Other construction is going on in the area at the
same time as ours and some of the streets' inaccessibility is due to
those projects. Faculty and staff are trying to think positively: we'll
all be in better shape from the extra walking. How's that for making
lemonade out of lemons?
Yes, much is going on
here. Things are changing by the minute. Familiar landmarks are there
one day and gone the next. Strange, loud noises are a constant part
of our lives now. Though it's disrupting, we're hanging in there. We're
focusing on the future when we'll see the rewards of all this in a
modern, streamlined new building environment. And for sure, we'll always keep
YOU posted on the progress. For now, if you haven't already, please bookmark the
WebCam
link and enjoy our slide show of photographs on the Construction Update
pages. See you next update.
