n Saturday March 20th, the
annual Parent's Day event at HSOP got off to a rousing start at 9 AM sharp. It's that
time of year when proud parent's get to see their student
pharmacists in action. And did they ever get action – blood
pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, osteoporosis, and body
mass index screenings and medication assessments were going on
in several locations throughout the building. As the students
performed these procedures, they were supervised by several HSOP
professors: Ms. Ann Janer and Mr. Steve Butler, Drs. Kimberly Braxton Lloyd, Pamela Stamm,
Kelly Scolaro, Kristen Helms, Erika Kleppinger, and Bernie Olin.
Dean Evans met with all comers in his conference room and
answered questions concerning the plans for renovation of the
HSOP building, which at long last is underway.
Then there were tours of several
working labs where actual research was taking place. Special thanks go
to Drs. Charles Breese and Vishnu Suppiramanian who opened
their labs to visitors and graciously answered questions for
everyone. Dr. Greg Kochak did the same in his manufacturing lab
where he showed how tablets are made and answered queries. The
tablet making machine, similar to ones used in industry, is
impressive to see.
Visitors also got to tour the AU
Pharmaceutical Care Center, a patient care center
located inside the Harrison School of Pharmacy. Visitors were also
escorted across the street for a tour of the AU Pharmacy which
is operated by HSOP. Nancy Kickliter is the Chief Pharmacist.
This facility utilizes ScriptPro, a state-of the-art robotic dispensing machine
developed by HSOP pharmacy faculty members. The machine has
proven to cut down on medication errors which save lives. It is
the wave of the future in pharmacy.
Refreshments were served in room 319 where HSOP Director of
Recruitment was set up with a photo display to talk to prospective students and
answer any question parents or students might have. And last but not least, the student organizations
had HSOP imprinted items for sale to raise money for their
community projects. Of special mention, Lance Hagler and Darrell
Childress, representing the SGA, were selling tickets
for a beautifully matted and
framed, autographed photo of "Cadillac" Williams. Anne Marie
Liles, President of ASP, had an impressive on-going laptop slide
show of colorful pictures showing the many activities ASP has
sponsored or been a part of over the year. All the officers and
members of the student pharmacy organizations did an outstanding
and professional job of hosting visitors, conducting tours and
hosting their organizations' tables. And as usual, the event
wound down by 11AM leaving plenty of time for everyone to attend
Auburn's "A" Day football game in the afternoon.
Thanks to all who helped make Parent's Day a
success this year. Everyone deserves a lot of credit for their hard work.
Here are the student volunteers:
Jason Haughton, Andrea Sesler, Anna Morgan, Min
Hui Loi-Braden, Sherone Ruggs, Jennifer Patterson, Cori
Williams, Anne Marie Liles, Sara Fletcher, Darrell Childress,
Lance Hagler, Matt Sega, Jim Allen, Ryan Honer, Susan Duggin,
Brandy Knight, Andrea Hedges, Miranda Nelson, Nicole Coker,
Jessica Baggett, Terrance Moore, Matt Guyen, Rachel Mann, Sarita
Bhat, Shay Smith, Justin Nicholson, Scott Taylor, and Sara
Lundeen
And let's not forget those faithful, hard working staff members: Brinda Lisano, Kathy
Kyle and Jane Drake. We had a wonderful turn out of parents and student
pharmacists. Nobody appeared to get lost going into
or out of the building; a safety wire barricade has been erected around much of
the current building because of the building renovation project. In spite of that small inconvenience, the weather was just about perfect and one could say the same
for 2004 Parent's Day.
