Governor Riley Meets with HSOP Legislative Day Volunteerslabama Pharmacy Association (APA) sponsored the annual APA Legislative Day on Thursday, April 14, 2005 at the State House in Montgomery. The goal was to communicate the value of pharmacy in the state to Alabama state legislators. Legislative Day is always an important event for Alabama pharmacists and student pharmacists, allowing them the opportunity to showcase pharmaceutical care services to Alabama legislators. But this year's event garnered more publicity than usual, because none other than Governor Bob Riley himself dropped by the testing station. HSOP wishes to thank Gov. Riley for contributing to such good PR for the School. This unusual photo opportunity was also chronicled in the Spring issue of Alabama Pharmacy 2005;38:21.

Kimberly Braxton Lloyd, Pharm.D., Director of Auburn University Pharmaceutical Care Center (AUPCC) and Chair of the APA Legislative Day Committee, headed the contingent from the Harrison School of Pharmacy (HSOP). It was well represented by 9 faculty and staff members and 25 students. These participants provided a number of services  to the state legislators between the hours of 8 to 12, including weight and body composition analysis, osteoporosis screenings, blood pressure measurements, cholesterol evaluation, and cardiovascular risk assessments. During the morning hours, they conducted over 70 cholesterol tests, 33 Glucose/Operation Diabetes tests, 56 CV Risk Assessments, over 18 osteoporosis screenings and 2 Heartburn Assessments. Dr. Olin also was available to respond to drug information questions.

At noon, the group met with legislators for an open‑floor discussion concerning pharmacy issues and other topics. Afterwards, a casual lunch was served in the APA office before all returned home to Auburn. (Be sure to view the slide show on the side bar.) Many thanks to each of the generous participants who contributed to the success of this annual event.
