ever say
the Harrison School of Pharmacy folks don't know how to party! When the
roof on the new Education and Clinical wing was finally finished, Brice Contracting Company
threw a bash that will long be remembered by all who attended. Blue and
orange covered tables, folding
chairs and food service stations were moved out onto the 1st floor
of the new building, patio-style. The
menu was definitely southern: fried catfish,
hush puppies, coleslaw, chicken tenders, french fries, banana pudding
and iced tea. Now, you can't get much further south than that!
David Laney, Brice Project Manager, gave a short welcome and
Bruce Adams, Vice President for Brice, gave an invocation to start things off. In addition to the
School's faculty and staff, Brice invited their entire construction
crew, a contingent from ETV, and one from AU Facilities including Terri
Carson, AU Design Project Manager, and Angel Colon, AU Project Manager
and a group from
Telecommunications and Media Support, including John Gober, Info Tech
Sr. Specialist. According to all reports, there was not much need for "doggie bags"
afterwards. The spread supplied by Whiskers Catfish Catering rated high
compliments. They operated out of a self-contained truck that was simply
parked inside the new building at about the spot the new auditorium will
soon occupy. But the most dramatic moment came when Dean Evans and Jeff
Smith, Brice Field Supervisor, were lifted to the top of the building in
a hydraulic "bucket" to affix a fir tree to the new roof (see pictures
in the Topping Out
slide
show), an act symbolizing finishing the roof of a new building.
To say everyone was
"hungry" for this moment would not be too tongue-in-cheek, not after
living through the often disruptive, but all too necessary construction
process. But the occasion was also about being able to stop, take a deep breath, appreciate the moment and celebrate the
real progress that has been made.
Here's the contractor's technical review of
the work done in October:
1. Concrete: All floor slabs are complete.
2. Steel Erection: 95% complete. Erected stair towers and grand stair.
3. Fireproofing: Started Ground Floor.
4. Metal Studs: Continued Exterior stud framing and began interior stud
framing on second floor.
5. Plumbing: Most overhead rough-in complete.
6. HVAC: Overhead rough-in about 40% complete for entire building.
7. Electrical: All in slab rough-in complete. Started interior wall
rough-in.
8. Fire Protection: Finished existing building fourth floor. Started
existing building second floor.
