2005 Orientation Week was hosted at Foy Union on August 9 through the
13th. The highlight of the week was a mock trial. Former Alabama Chief
Justice C.C. "Bo" Torbert presided over the proceedings. Law professor
Mark Conradi and AU lawyer Lee Armstrong opposed each other by
representing both sides of the case. A group of HSOP faculty acted as
the jury. One of the P1 student pharmacists agreed to act as the
defendant. It was a mock case based on the reality of what could happen
when a pharmacist fails to properly counsel a patient leading to a drug
interaction that may have caused the patient's death. Throughout the
week, the P1s worked on a "case study" leading up to this mock trial.
These types of issues have become so important to the pharmacy
profession that HSOP is now offering a course called Introduction to
Foundations of Pharmacy (PYDI 5080) that will deal with the same kinds
of issues highlighted in the mock trial. All incoming students will be
required to take the course. From all reports, the mock trial was a very
intense experience and proved to be a beneficial introduction to the new
course. Judge Torbert, a man with years of real courtroom dramas behind
him, said he found the mock trial an "enjoyable experience." Perhaps the
student pharmacists' perspective was a little different: Sobering might
be a fitting word. One thing for sure, it got their attention. Groups of
them were seen cornering upper classmen after the trial to talk over
their reactions. They will be thoroughly motivated when the course
starts, and that's a good thing. You can view all
the week's events by

Other
events through the week proved to be absorbing in their own way. The
Team Tower Building exercise and contest taught many lessons and brought
on a lot of laughter. Working on the Team Puzzle contest proved to be a
real brain teaser, but also helped the "newbies" get to know each other
better.
Saturday brought the week to a close starting with a morning meeting
between the Dean and parents. It gave them a chance to get answers to
some of their
questions. A luncheon at Foy Union was attended by approximately 500
students and their families. The grand finale was the White Coat
Ceremony in which 120 new student pharmacists received their white
coats, one of the most recognizable symbols of the professional
pharmacist. Each student posed for a photo with the Dean as they
received their white coats.

class.
Many thanks to Justice Torbert, Mr. Conradi
and Mr. Armstrong for participating in the mock trial exercise. And thanks to the
HSOP faculty, staff and student pharmacists who participated in all
the Orientation Week's events. A special mention must be made of the leadership
shown by the P2s and P3s who assisted with activities throughout the
week. Thanks also to our sponsors Rite Aid, Kmart and Walgreens for providing
meals during the week. Your efforts were much appreciated by everyone.
