Briefly describe innovation Dan Bowlin’s philosophy is that the pharmacist is a problem-solver. He is currently in the process of revamping his pharmacy and has already moved himself from the dispensing area down into a clinical booth setting. The pharmacy technicians (techs) now do all of the dispensing and he simply checks their work. He accomplishes this through the use of different colored baskets for different prescription categories. His next step is getting the techs certified and trained so each one travels no more than two or three steps, to save all of the unnecessary travel (and time) that is usually wasted. He then wants to set up a community health care team, including a dentist, surgeon, optometrist, chiropractor, etc., and sit down together periodically to discuss the health care of the patients.

Dan also has a contract with Signa insurance company. He gets one quarter of the amount he saves them in health care costs in 97 versus 96. This is the first reimbursement he will receive for the services he provides other than filling prescriptions.

Other of the innovative things that Dan does include having the only diabetes clinic in town, scheduling periodic screenings provided by the Red Cross (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.), a pulmonary specialist, an optometrist, a podiatrist, and a dentist. He also brings in body screening equipment every six months and screens for body fat and percent body water and muscle. He is PCCA certified, and does a good bit of hormone therapy, and has compounded for the Kansas City Zoo. He has laminated customer cards to give the patients a feeling of membership.
