Briefly describe innovation:
The Pharmaceutical Care Center (PCC) is an ambulatory care pharmacy that fully integrates
clinical and distributive services. The distribution/product work flow consists of 1-2
(STE) technicians and 1 pharmacist aided by an Optifill II Automated Dispensing System by
Baxter Healthcare. The clinical work flow is staffed by 2-3 (STE) pharmacists that assess
patients medication therapy for efficacy, toxicity, and compliance as well as educating
the patients about their medication therapy. Three hundred and fifty prescriptions are
filled per day and approximately one hundred and sixty six patients are seen per day. One
hundred percent of the patients are counseled/assessed. The goal of this practice is to be
a model for community pharmacy practices and to demonstrate how pharmacists can change
their focus from product oriented to patient care.
Method of Reimbursement:
Currently reimbursement for cognitive services is not directly occurring due to the fact
that 80% of the patients are Medicaid and pharmacists can not bill for cognitive services.
However, some pharmacists in the clinic are billing under the Physician's Provider Number.
