Briefly describe innovation
The name of Mr. Jensen's community pharmacy is "The Medicine Shoppe." It is a
ninety square foot apothecary that is located in space adjoining the offices of 16 family
practice physicians. These physicians refer their patients to the "The Medicine
Shoppe" for their prescription needs. It is a community pharmacy that concentrates on
pharmaceutical care. They specialize in caring for high risk patients such as diabetics,
asthmatics, and patients with hypertension. Intervention methods such as bubble packs,
reminders for refills (e.g. postcards), and Compu Med are used. Compu Med is an in-home
reminder system that releases the appropriate dose at the appropriate time. The patient
may program their own voice into the Compu Med system to inform themselves that it is time
for their medication.
This practice was established in 1994.
