Briefly describe innovation

In his practice, Ray Marcrom places heavy emphasis on "care giving". He and the other 7 pharmacist that work at his three practice areas are involved in disease state management of asthma, diabetes, and also with anti-coagulative therapy. Dr. Marcrom and his employees have developed a program for asthma. They sell these programs and also help to train other pharmacists to manage asthma as Dr. Marcrom does in his practice. He is also involved in CSA DUR (Community Service Area Drug Use Review). There are a number of people like himself who meet regionally and identify patients who need to be managed more carefully. For example, they discuss patients who are taking five or more controlled substances, ten or more prescription drugs, or patients who are going to more than one physician or pharmacy per month. Marcrom promotes and advertises drug regimen review. Marcrom feels that pharmacist must move towards physical assessment. He has implemented this into his practice by physically assessing children for physicians at times and plans to move forward in this direction.

Reimbursement rate Most services are reimbursed, but not all are reimbursed to pharmacy. If quality meets the standard of the reimbursor, they will get reimbursed. They bill to everyone - even Medicare and Medicaid. There is some resistance, but not much.

Ray Marcrom has "consulting arm" that overseas research being done in pharmacy and also his clinics. He does consulting for others such as PBMs, Tenn Care. He and his staff are going to spend a month in California training several hundred pharmacists in asthma care. They also charge for these services.

In the process of installing a new software program, HCC out of Texas. It is a pharmaceutical care package that integrates providing pharmaceutical care and medication dispensing.
