Briefly describe innovation
Mike Mastromonica is not exactly involved in an innovative practice setting. He has
however, found an innovative alternative for the use of his pharmacy degree. Mike
graduated pharmacy school in 1976 from a college in New Jersey. After working two years
for a chain drug store Mike became dissatisfied with his working hours and environment. He
wanted a job in pharmacy that was different from the traditional setting of a drug store.
In 1978 after much thought and consideration Mike accepted a position with a computer
company which at that time was promoting a very innovative idea for the retail drug store;
computer automation in pharmacy. In 1978 only three percent of retail pharmacies were
utilizing some type of computer automation, by 1990 that number had changed to ninety nine
percent.
When Mike began his new career in the pharmacy computer business he knew a lot about
pharmacy and nothing about computers. However, his new job required no special training.
Today Mike is working as a Marking and Sales Specialist with a pharmacy automated software
company called Condor located near Birmingham. The software his company sells automates
all aspects involved with filling a prescription in a retail setting including drug
utilization review and third party billing. Since Mike began a career in pharmacy
software, computers in the retail drug store has become common place.
