Community apothecary. In this pharmacy, the technicians are utilized in the preparation of patient's medication. The technicians are located in a separate room to minimize distractions and decrease the medication dispensing errors. The pharmacist is located in an office that offers privacy for counseling his patients. When a new prescription is received, the pharmacist enters the information into the computer and sends the prescription to the dispensing area for the technicians to prepare. While the prescription is being filled, the pharmacist thoroughly counsels and answers any questions the patient may have. The pharmacist is also involved in "facts detailing" for his patients and is trying to establish a "facts detailing network" for the entire state of Louisiana. "Facts detailing" involves the pharmacist becoming the patient's advocate and taking responsibility for making his or her physicians aware of the price range of different classes of medications. This is important in helping patients afford the high cost of their medications.
