Briefly describe innovation
Ms Precht is developing her own program for smoking cessation. The initial consult involves gathering information about the patients medical history and taking a medication profile. At this point, the first set of educational materials is handed out. Ms Prechts goals are to educate the patient on the dangers of smoking and to develop a change in his/her lifestyle that eliminates smoking from the daily routine. The patient meets with Ms Precht once a week for one half hour for a period of four to eight weeks. During the counseling sessions, the patient completes worksheets and sets goals. Ms Precht helps the patient identify triggers that compel them to smoke, and together they develop alternatives to overcome the temptation. In addition to the counseling, Ms Precht assigns reading homework to reinforce the consequences of smoking and encourages therapy using the patch.
Method of Reimbursement
Payor(s): The patient pays for the service out of pocket. Insurance companies are not currently paying for efforts on smoking cessation. Ms Precht is a member of the Tobacco Reform State Committee, which is working diligently to convince insurance companies to pay for the value of smoking cessation.
Reimbursement rate: The cost of the program is $200.00. The cost of the patch is additional. Ms Precht sells one patch at a time as a convenience to the patient.
Is documentation required? No, insurance companies are not currently reimbursing this service.
Is specialized training required? Yes, the state offers certification in counseling to educate the pharmacist on how to deal with the psychological aspects of smoking cessation.
Is software/instrumentation required? Ms Precht uses notebook computers during the sessions; the patient and the pharmacist both have one. Ms Precht is developing her own program and worksheets with Microsoft Word and Excel. The notebooks are used for the worksheets and for documentation of patient goal setting and progress.
