Briefly describe innovation

Steve has been operating his pharmacy for the past three years under an innovative program designed to enhance patient compliance & education. This program has been developed by the Kansas Pharmacists and will be presented on May 23 to the Kansas SRS. The idea behind the plan is to reduce Kansas Medcaid costs by increased intervention and counseling by the pharmacist. Studies support the idea that increased intervention by the pharmacist will increase medication expenditures but will decrease overall medicaid expenditures by reducing physician and hospital visits.  The plan consists of three phases. Phase I includes the use of starter doses to determine drug compatibility, compliance monitoring, product recommendations, enhanced counseling and reconsideration of the appropriateness of dispensing a 60-90 day supply of medication. Phase II involves drug therapy management by the pharmacist based on National Institute on Health guidlines. Phase III involves case management by disease state. Steve is currently working with this plan in his pharmacy excluding the starter dose program.
