Accu-Chek PDM Pro by Boeringer Manheim allows pharmacists to connect to patients' glucometers and analyze the attainment of therapeutic outcomes in diabetes. The units download the reading taken by the patient over a period of time and does a trend analysis of the data. This allows the pharmacist to suggest life style changes and even to praise the patient for progress made in their efmanagement activities. The One Touch is another glucometer that supports this feature.
Patient Care Technologies offers a hand held data general computer for use in home care
delivery of services. The unit allows a visiting nurse to connect a home care office and
download the content and structure for a series of home visits he or she is to conduct.
The content includes the previous data collected on any existing patient and the clinical
action steps to be taken during the scheduled visit. The download even transmits driving
instruction from the nurse's home to the first and subsequent patients' homes. After doing
the home visit procedures the nurse plugs the hand-held device into the telephone and the
modem enables over 2 and 1/2 hours of paperwork to be done by the home office PC.
The Medication Management System uses the Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) caps. Patients use the specially equipped vials which prompt by alarm when the dose of a medicine is due and then records the time and date of each opening of the medication vial. The patient brings the vial to the pharmacy and the vial sends a record of the use of the medicine to a PC and this computer displays the compliance data for the drug.
