Angela I. Calderón, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacal Sciences. She received her B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Panama, Panama City, Republic of Panama (1990), M.S. in Pharmacognosy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois (1997), and Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from the University of Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland under the guidance of Prof. Kurt Hostettmann (2002). Then, she conducted her postdoctorate on biomedical applications of mass spectrometry at Prof. Richard B. van Breemen’s laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago (2006-2008). She joined the faculty at Auburn University School of Pharmacy in August 2008.
Dr. Angela Calderón’s primary research interests are in six areas:
Biomedical applications of mass spectrometry in the discovery and development of bioactive natural products from plants for tuberculosis and tropical diseases particularly malaria.
• The developed in-house LC-MS based biological assays are available to identify inhibitors of key metabolic enzyme (shikimate kinase) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and inhibitors of oxidative stress related enzymes (thioredoxin and glutathione reductases) in Plasmodium falciparum.
• LC-MS based structure elucidation of bioactive natural products.
• Determination of purity of bioactive natural products using LC-MS.
Development of LC-MS based analytical methods for the identification and quantitation of bioactive or marker/standard compounds and potentially toxic compounds in botanical dietary supplements.
qNMR based quantitative analysis of natural products in plant material and botanical dietary supplements.
In vitro assessment of stability, metabolism and bioavailability of bioactive natural products and synthetic compounds using LC-MS.
LC-MS based metabolomic studies of promising medicinal and edible plant species and biological fluids.
Identification and quantitative analysis of proteins and peptides using LC-MS.
