My research interests lie at the intersection of bacterial pathobiology, biochemistry and molecular imaging. My lab is focused on the understanding of the pathobiology of staphylococcal diseases. This research is based in part on identification and biochemical characterization of the potential imaging targets expressed by the bacteria as a means to develop agents for the non-invasive monitoring of infections in animal models. Given the rise in antibiotic-resistance seen for these nosocomial staphylococcal infections, it is of paramount importance that we begin to understand the underlying mechanisms employed by this pathogen. Through the use of small-animal non-invasive imaging, molecular biology and biochemistry techniques, it is my hope that new imaging agents can be developed, which would be directly translatable to use in the clinic, while concurrently defining pathogenic mechanisms that result in establishment of disease. Specific imaging of S. aureus-diseases will also allow us: (1) to diagnose the causal bacterium, (2) to monitor in vivo the efficacy of therapies and (3) to assess clearance of the casual bacteria minimizing infection reoccurrence. Better understanding of the mechanisms these bacteria use evade the host immune response and cause disease will allow use to design better diagnostic tools to monitor the infections and ultimately design adjunctive therapies.
