Robert E. Smith, Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice was born in San Diego, California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Southern California. Upon graduation, Dr. Smith spent two years in the United States Public Health Service, Indian Health Service at Crow Agency, Montana where he was involved in public health related activities involving medication therapy and other aspects of health care. In 1971, Dr. Smith joined the faculty at Wayne State University College of Pharmacy in Detroit, Michigan. After seven years at Wayne State University, Dr. Smith served as a faculty member, department chair and assistant dean at Creighton University School of Pharmacy. In 1989 he was appointed Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy where he served until 1995. Following a one-year sabbatical at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Dr. Smith accepted his current position at Auburn University. He was recently elected President Elect (1998-99) and President (1999-2000) of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He is an invited speaker and consultant on professional and academic leadership as well as pedagogical and curricular change.
