Established in 1976 through a bequest by the late Lawler F. Snowden ’23 in honor and memory of his Professor of Pharmacy, Professor Lynn Stanford Blake. J.L. Bedsole Foundation Annual Scholarship The J.L. Bedsole Foundation was established for the purpose of providing scholarship aid to students in Mobile, Fairhope, and other southern Alabama counties to attend universities/colleges in Alabama. Mr. Bedsole helped many students in the early part of the 1900s to attend pharmacy school at Auburn by paying for their tuition, books, or meals. At his death, the foundation was established and the board of directors continues to provide needed financial support for pharmacy students at AU. Burroughs-Wellcome Scholarship Fund Established originally as a loan fund by the Burroughs-Wellcome Company. In the 1990s, the loan fund was converted to an endowment. Robert Alchus Carlisle Memorial Scholarship Fund Established on 1969 through a bequest under the terms of the last will and testament of Annie E. Carlisle. M. Winfield Cotton Fund for Excellence Mr. Cotton worked for most of his adult life for Durr Drugs (a wholesale distribution company in Montgomery) that was later bought by Bergen-Brunswig; Cardinal Health Care bought Bergen-Brunswig in early 2000. Mr. Cotton served in many capacities until his retirement after more than 30 years with the company. Bergen-Brunswig made the contribution to establish this scholarship as a retirement gift to Mr. Cotton. Dean’s Fund The Dean of the Harrison School of Pharmacy has an annual budget for scholarship awards. Each year, these dollars are distributed to many deserving students for academic merit, leadership merit, and demonstrated financial need.. Herbert Stokes Haire Pharmacy Scholarship Fund Mrs. Margaret S. Haire, in recognition of Mr. Haire’s many years of service in the practice of pharmacy and his love for the Auburn University School of Pharmacy, established this scholarship. George Hargreaves Established by his wife, Mrs. Jewel Hargreaves in 1976. John Harold Harmon ’69 Scholarship Endowment Established June 1, 2001 by John Harold Harmon. Dwight Henderson Annual Scholarship Mr. Henderson established this annual scholarship in 2001 for the purpose of providing aid to a student who has financial need. He is a 1970 AU pharmacy graduate and is currently VP in the pharmacy systems division of McKesson. He established his own company, Health Care Systems several years after graduation. The company provides a computer program for the management of pharmacy systems in hospitals; the company joined with McKesson in the late 1990s. David C. Hightower Endowed Memorial Pharmacy Scholarship Fund Established by Clyde & Betty Hightower, Susan Papp, & Kay Smith in 1986 in recognition of David’s many years of study and devotion to pharmacy. Dr. George M. Hocking Endowment for Scholarships and/or Assistantship/Fellowships Established by Dr. George M. Hocking on January 6, 2000. Gloria Hughes Established by Mr. Hughes in honor and memory of his wife in 1998. Gloria graduated in the 1950s and after several years of pharmacy practice joined her husband in the furniture business in Birmingham. Paul A. Lantrip, Sr. ’34 Endowed Award Fund Harry Linden Endowed Scholarship Fund Established by Mrs. Janice F. Linden on memory of her husband. James W. and Sarah F. Reid Middleton ’50 Established by Sarah F. Middleton in memory of her husband, James W. Middleton. Mark Dower Morgan ‘83 Memorial Scholarship Endowment Mark Morgan graduated from AU in 1983. After graduate, he became a practicing community pharmacist in and around the Auburn area. In the early 1990s, he purchased the Toomer’s Corner Drug Store and continued its operation until his death in 1997. This scholarship was funded by contributions from his family, friends and pharmacy classmates. Albert Nickel Pharmacy Scholarship Fund Established by his wife, Mrs. Ella Jo Nickel (deceased). Charles and Pat Perry Scholarship Endowment Established by Charles and Pat Perry on December 30, 1999. Pharmacist Mutual Established by Pharmacists Mutual Board of Directors. Plough Foundation Grant Established by the Plough Foundation of Memphis, Tennessee. Florence B. Purdue Alston Keith Rennie, Sr. and Leila L. Rennie Established in memory of Mr. And Mrs. Rennie by their children, Alston K. Rennie Jr. (deceased), Teresa R. Livingston and Irene R. Biggers. Claude A. Shumate, III Endowed Scholarship Established by Claude’s parents, wife, friends and classmates upon his death. Claude was a recent B.S. graduate when he died of pneumonia complications. SOS Foundation of Jefferson County Scholarship Grant Dr. Wayne Finley, Chairman of the SOS Foundation provided the following history: The SOS Foundation stands for "Sugar on Sunday" and refers to the polio vaccine that was given to children on a sugar cube. In the 60s and 70s, the Jefferson County Medical Association provided doctors to various school sites in B'ham to administer the polio vaccine on sugar cubes on Sunday afternoons. Donations were collected to provide The polio vaccine. Unspent monies from the collections were placed in an endowment and the interest provides scholarships for pharmacy students at Samford and AU. Don Tillery Dr. Tillery graduated from pharmacy school in 1950 and went to medical school after graduation to become a physician. He is retired and now spends his time between Florida and Montana. The funds from this endowment are used to provide support for the HSOP graduate student program. Fred Waits Established by Mr. Fred A. Waits in 1991 in recognition of the importance of financial assistance to help deserving pharmacy students complete their education at Auburn. Lucy C. Weil Established by the will of A. Sigmund Weil of Montgomery, Alabama in 1988. Harry H. Wheat Established by Mrs. Parrish in 1993 in memory of her husband, Harry. The scholarship is intended for students from Pickens or Washington County or from West Alabama. Harry practiced pharmacy in Aliceville for many years. His daughter and a son are both AU graduates. T. Lester White ’72 Friends and family of Lester White ’72 established this fund shortly after his untimely death from a motorcycle accident in 2000. At the time of his death, Lester was a full time lobbyist for the pharmaceutical industry in Montgomery, AL. He also served for many years as a state legislator from Dadeville, AL. Dr. Byron B. Williams & Mrs. Mary Williams Beck Endowment Dr. Byron B. Williams Jr. came to Auburn in the spring of 1951 as a new graduate of the University of Florida to begin over forty years teaching in The School of Pharmacy. Both he and his wife, Mary, embraced the Auburn University community and were proud to call Auburn home. This scholarship was established by Mr. Martin Beck on behalf of Dr. Byron B. Williams Jr. and Mrs. Mary Williams Beck (Mr. Beck’s wife, now deceased).
