Dr. Subhrajit Bhattacharya joined the Harrison School of Pharmacy faculty on March 2, 2020 as an assistant research professor. In his position, Dr. Bhattacharya will conduct cutting-edge research in neuroscience, electrophysiology, using modern technology and genetic models, guide new researchers towards accomplishing their research goals, and supervise the Electrophysiology and Neuroscience Core in the Pharmacy Research Building.

Dr. Bhattacharya received his bachelor of pharmacy degree from the Institute of Pharmacy in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India in 2009. He then completed his master of science degree in pharmaceutical sciences from Butler University in 2011.

His initial stint at Auburn came as a graduate student, working under Dr. Vishnu Suppiramaniam. Dr. Bhattacharya completed his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences in 2015. He then went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at Emory University, working under Drs. Stephen Traynelis and Ray Dingledine.

Dr. Bhattacharya is an active member of the Society for Neuroscience and the American Epilepsy Society. He was the recipient of an AES Fellowship in 2018-19.

Dr. Bhattacharya currently lives in Newnan with his family. In his spare time, he enjoys swimming, riding bicycles, going for long drives, and traveling.

Research Interests

Dr. Bhattacharya's lab uses a wide range of electrophysiological techniques to probe the function of neuronal circuits, and synapses, including voltage clamp recordings from neurons responding to electrical or optical activation of identified afferent inputs, whole cell currents from native and recombinant receptors, recordings from receptors incorporated into lipid bi-layers, and excised outside-out patches that contain a single active channel (in epilepsy, stroke, prenatal use of substances of abuse, AD, and neurodegeneration).

He investigates questions relating to circuit function in healthy tissue and in neurological disease, synaptic transmission, and ion channel modulation. Two simultaneous approaches revolve around the screening of new pharmacological probes for modulating glutamate receptors through chemical biology, and the evaluation epileptic phenotypes and genotypes on circuit function.

In addition to electrophysiology, he uses modern molecular approaches, cutting edge imaging, and biochemical analyses to evaluate receptor, synaptic, and circuit function.
