E. Kelly Hester, Pharm.D., FCCP, BCPS, AAHIVP is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice. She graduated with her B.S. in Pharmacy degree in 1994 and Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1996 from the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy. She completed an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Practice residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (1996-97). Hester became a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 2004 and received the HIV Pharmacist Specialist Credential (AAHIVP) from the American Academy of HIV Medicine in 2010.

Hester worked for three years at UAB in Birmingham serving as a clinical and investigational drug pharmacist in the HIV/AIDS outpatient/research clinic. She then worked at the VA in Tuskegee in the Geriatric Primary Care Clinic and outpatient anticoagulation service. From 2004-2020, she worked as a clinical pharmacist at the Medical Advocacy and Outreach Copeland Care Clinic in Montgomery.

Hester has been an active member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) chairing several committees including the Programming Committee, Educational Affairs Committee, and Publications Committee. In 2015, she was recognized as Fellow of ACCP. She has also served the Alabama Society of Health-System Pharmacists (AlSHP) as a Council Director and currently serves on the Student Affairs Committee.

Hester was recognized as the 2020 Mahlon G. Turner Pharmacy Fellow in Outreach from the Harrison School of Pharmacy. She was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Harrison School of Pharmacy in 2014 and has received the Preceptor of Excellence award six times. She was the recipient of the Harrison School of Pharmacy Hargreaves Faculty Mentor Award in 2014.


Practice Site

Currently, Dr. Hester practices in affiliation with the Baptist Medical Center South Multidisciplinary Specialty Infectious Diseases Clinic in Montgomery, Alabama and the Unity Wellness Clinic in Opelika, Alabama to provide collaborative medication therapy management services for the primary care and HIV medical needs of patients in central Alabama. Areas of clinical interest include metabolic and cardiovascular disease in the HIV population, antiretroviral therapy in pregnancy, HIV pharmacotherapy, and antiretroviral stewardship. Educational scholarship interests include postgraduate education, interprofessional education and professional development.
