AUBURN, Alabama - Dr. Matthew Jenkins, a member of the Harrison College of Pharmacy Class of 2009, was recently recognized as the 2009 recipient of the Auburn Pharmacy Alumni Affiliate Distinguished Young Alumnus Award. The award was presented at the Auburn Breakfast at the Alabama Pharmacy Association Annual Meeting and Convention on June 10 at The Lodge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Jenkins serves as the inaugural Chief Pharmacy Officer for the VCU Health System Authority. In his role, he is charged with shaping organizational strategy across the health system for inpatient and retail pharmacy programs.
“Matthew has established himself as a leader in the profession of pharmacy, advancing practice through his position with the VCA Health System Authority and the VCU School of Pharmacy,” said Dr. Leigh Ann Ross, Dean of the Harrison College of Pharmacy. “We are proud of what he has accomplished in his career so far and the great things that lie ahead.”
Upon receiving his Pharm.D. from HCOP in 2009, Jenkins went on to complete a PGY-1/PGY-2 Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside while also completing his master’s degree in health system pharmacy administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
After a stint on faculty with the University of Florida College of Pharmacy and a practice site with UF Health Shands Hospital, he landed with the University of Virginia Health System, where he rose to senior director of pharmacy services. In that role he was responsible for multi-hospital health system pharmacy services integration with a 720-bed academic medical center, including clinical and operational services for acute care and post-acute care pharmacy settings, operational contracts, operational services supporting 340B integrity and financial performance, pharmacy informatics, regulatory compliance and personnel oversight.
In his current role with VCU Health, Jenkins has oversight of VCU Medical Center, VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital and VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital pharmacy services, including pharmacy services at our ambulatory locations. In addition, he works closely with the Dean of the VCY School of Pharmacy to foster an environment of excellence in research, education and clinical care.
