Outstanding Graduate Student Awards

Nominations by department

The Graduate School and the Graduate Student Council wish to honor Auburn’s 20 most outstanding graduate students. Ten of those honored will be in master’s or educational specialist programs and ten in doctoral programs. Each department or school is invited to nominate one outstanding graduate student at the master’s/educational specialist level and another at the doctoral level, if such programs are available in the department or school.

A complete nomination packet will consist of: A student vita. The vita should include and indicate which of the following have been accomplished while a graduate student at Auburn University: academic record; work experience; teaching or other role in undergraduate program; publications (research, extension, general); creative work; grant development; professional presentations; membership and service in professional associations; University and community service; honors and awards. Three letters of support for the nomination. The letters of support should emphasize accomplishments associated with the graduate study at Auburn.

Harry Merriweather Fellowship

Nominations by Department

The Graduate School will award up to four Harry Merriwether Fellowships for the 2017-2018 academic year. The Merriwether Fellowships will provide a stipend of $2,000 per student for the academic year. Selection is based on professional promise. The following policies apply to nominations:

  1. The recipient must be enrolled as a doctoral student for the 2017-18 academic year. There are no limitations on the field of study. A recipient is expected to devote full time to graduate study and may hold an assistantship or another fellowship.
  2. Each department may nominate only one student for the Merriwethers.
  3. Nominations should include the following:
    1. The departmental nominator’s letter and at least one additional letter (but no more than 5 letters).
    2. The nominee’s resume or vita. This should be as complete as possible. The various types of publication (e.g., abstracts, refereed journal and book articles, non-refereed articles, and other scholarly works), if any, should be listed in full under separate headings.

Williams Graduate Awards

Student Application

Preference will be given to military veterans who have served a minimum of four years on active duty and received an honorable discharge. Potential recipients are asked to provide a DD214 Form to demonstrate eligibility.

The Williams Graduate Awards have been established through the Auburn University Foundation by Colonel (ret.) Garland H. Williams and Kathleen P. Williams. The Graduate School will award up to four Williams Awards in the amount of $1,000, for the 2017-2018 academic year. Selection is based on academic and professional promise.

Graduate Travel Grants

Submit directly to graduate school.

The Graduate Research and Travel Fellowship program assists graduate students with their research endeavors by providing funds to travel to conferences and/or seminars to make presentations on behalf of Auburn University. The fellowship is not intended to support attending courses at other schools, research, or general educational travel.

Distinguished Dissertation Award

$500

Deadline for nominations is April 20.

Six students chosen university wide.

The application process, selection criteria, and award categories are modeled after the Council of Graduate Schools/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards, so that selected award-winners from Auburn may also be nominated for these national awards at the appropriate time.

Each college/school is invited to select and nominate up to three students (in each award category as appropriate) for the Graduate School awards. If a college/school nominates more than three students in any one category, the Graduate School will contact one of the unit's associate deans (or another designee) to downselect the top three candidates.

Master’s Thesis Award

$250

Deadline for nominations is July 14.

Six students chosen university wide.

The application process, selection criteria, and award categories are modeled after the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools’ Master’s Thesis Awards, so that selected award-winners from Auburn may also be nominated for these regional awards at the appropriate time.

Each college/school is invited to select and nominate up to three students (in each award category as appropriate) for the Graduate School awards. If a college/school nominates more than three students in any one category, the Graduate School will contact one of the unit's associate deans (or another designee) to downselect the top three candidates.

Outstanding International Graduate Student Award

Application Deadline: Call Comes from OIE through the Dean in April or May.

One MS or PhD Student may be nominated by each department

Graduate Programs Committee selects Outstanding International Student and Runner Up.


Dean’s Travel Scholarship

Each department has approximately $3,000 to fund travel for graduate students who present at national meetings. Department’s to coordinate actual fund balance with Laurie Newton. Call is issued by each department and a copy award letters sent to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs and Laurie Newton. Charlotte Cheatham in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs is provided a list of awardees. All notifications to be completed no later than July 15 each year.
